Bracing for the Worst: Cisco Layoffs

The corporation is expected to cut jobs and offer buyouts, but how much of it will impact Milpitas residents? We want to hear from you.

Layoffs aren't uncommon in the Silicon Valley tech industry. And they might soon be coming to a company near you. 

On Monday, in an article by Bloomberg, one industry analyst predicted that Cisco would cut as many as 10,000 jobs, or 14 percent of its workforce, in upcoming layoffs.

For a corporation that has more than 70,000 employees worldwide, it's hard to estimate just how many of those layoffs will affect Milpitas residents.

Details will be given during Cisco's next earnings call scheduled for early August, Karen Tillman, a spokeswoman for the company, said in the article.

Headquartered in San Jose, Cisco, with several campuses in Milpitas, is the largest employer in the city. 

Slightly over 3,000 employees work from Cisco's Milpitas campuses, according to Diana Barnhart, the city's economic development manager.

Unemployment was at 10 percent in Milpitas for the month of May, according to the California Employment Development Department. That's a from March, when 100 additional people were looking for actively work compared to the 3,100 in May.
