The Fil-Am Fiesta features dancing, music, food and Filipino coffee at the community center on June 11.

The Filipino-American Association of Milpitas Corp. hosted its 21st annual Fil-Am Fiesta on Saturday at the community center. The showcase featured a wide variety of dances performed by all ages, music, food and Filipino coffee. Mayor Jose Esteves and Councilmember Armando Gomez attended the event.

Performances from different tribes highlighted the importances of music and dance in everyday life. Dances reflected elements of the islands, imitating ocean waves with fluid and graceful motions. Outfits were made of vibrant materials and featured elaborate decorations.

The largest Asian ethnic group in Milpitas are Filipinos, and the largest comes from the Philippines followed by Vietnam, according to the American Community Survey 2009. About 70 percent of the more than 11,100 Filipinos in Milpitas were born in the motherland, according to the survey.
