Milpitas High Cross Country Team Perseveres Despite Foot Injuries

The boys team placed 11th at the Central Coast Championship after a couple of the team members received foot injuries.

Eight athletes from the Milpitas High School Cross Country Team competed at the Central Coast Section Championship meet at Toro Park in Salinas Saturday afternoon.

The seven boys who competed in the Division I race for the Trojans were lead by seniors Angelo Banzon, Yohaness Estifanos, Connor Prior and Ryan Tan. Junior Jonathan Donkers, Sophomore Ralph Balaoing and Freshman Jeremy Shaw completed the team.

Standout runner Yohaness Estifanos placed 1st in the 3-mile race, winning in 15:12. Estifanos has now won the CCS Div. I race for two consecutive years.

The boys team placed 11th overall after being “plagued with injury” said Coach Bridget Hall. One boy had recently hurt his foot, while another sprained his ankle.

“I’m pretty proud of the way the team stepped up,” Hall said. “The place we finished in was not really indicative of the talent of the team that we had this season. I was really excited about some of the leadership that I saw on the team amongst the boys…they tried to step up to fill in the gaps that were created by the injuries that we had.”

Sophomore Sierra Brenciaglia was the lone competitor for the Trojans in the girls Division I race. Brenciaglia placed 34th out of 127 competitors. Her time of 20:27 is a new personal best. “It was a great race,” she said. “I improved my time by almost 40 seconds.” This was Brenciaglia’s second time competing in the CCS Championship race in her two years at MHS.

Estifanos will advance to compete at the CIF State meet in Fresno on November 24.
