Tech Roundup: Linear Tech Shares Rise Despite Dip in Profits, Flextronics to Leave Milpitas, and More
A roundup of news stories to come out of the Milpitas tech world over the past week.
It’s good news for San Jose, but bad news for Milpitas. Flextronics, which currently has its U.S. headquarters in Milpitas, announced this week that it has leased roughly 130,000 square feet in San Jose’s America Center, and plans to move its headquarters there. The move will bring 500 jobs to San Jose. Flextronics has not yet announced when it plans to make the move.
It was mixed news for Milpitas-based Linear Technology this week. The circuit-maker’s net income for the fiscal second quarter fell. The company reported profits of $87.9 million in the quarter that ended Jan. 1, which was down 39 percent from $143.7 million in the same quarter last year. In shares, that’s equivalent to 38 cents per share this year versus 62 cents per share last year. However, the company’s shares rose 7.5 percent in after-hours trading following the announcement, as CEO Lothar Maier commented on a promising business forecast looking ahead in 2012. Maier said Linear expects revenue to improve 4 to 8 percent from the second to the third quarter. That would equate to revenue of $306.1 million to $317.9 million for the third quarter. Analysts anticipate the company will generate revenue of $301.5 million for the period, on average.
NuvoSun, a producer of thin-film solar cells, which opened a 40-megawatt production facility in Milpitas just last year, received a $10 million investment from Dow Chemical this week, the nation’s largest chemical maker. NuvoSun CEO David Pearce said this third round of funding will be used solely for “business operations,” and that he does not believe the current state of the economy lends itself well to NuvoSun expanding with any overseas manufacturing at this time. This is the third time Dow Chemical has invested in NuvoSun.
Milpitas-based Dialogic Inc. this week launched a new software-based media server for mobile, broadband and cloud environments. The Dialogic PowerMedia Extended Media Server (PowerMedia XMS) enables service providers to deliver standards-based video conferencing features to create new, and to enhance existing, audio and web conferencing services. The software-based media server runs on a wide range of physical and virtual computing platforms and scales to meet variable demand for conferencing and other value added services (VAS).
Milpitas-based JDSU this week announced it is launching a campaign on its video website JDSU.tv to help “fight the battle against pharmaceutical counterfeiting.” In a press release, JDSU quotes the World Health Organization, stating that double the amount of counterfeit drugs were sold in 2010 versus 2005. Selling counterfeit pharmaceutical drugs is an easy crime because creating fake drugs is relatively easy, as is setting up what looks to be a legitimate storefront of the Internet, the press release said. JDSU will launch a campaign on JDSU.tv showing how the company’s authentication solutions can help protect consumers and pharmaceutical companies from drug counterfeiters.
