Community Events in Alviso this Weekend

A free festival with pumpkin giveaway and live entertainment at Alviso Marina, 5K walk-a-thon for charity, and a new environmental educational center open to the public.

Next door to Milpitas, Alviso offers a variety of outdoor, family-friendly events this weekend. Nearly all the activities are free, so why not visit Alviso if you haven't yet?

Day on the Bay: A Multicultural Festival on Saturday offers free fun for all ages at the . Kids can pick out a free pumpkin just in time for Halloween. Older kids or adults can take a test ride out on a kayak in the Alviso Slough. Seniors can enjoy the views of the marina and watch live performances on multiple stages. Walk to the Future Silicon Valley: A Walk For Our Local Youth starts Saturday morning at the Jubilee Church in Alviso. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. and the 5K walk (about three miles) starts at 9 a.m. Benefits a kid-friendly participating non-profit of your choice–Valley Medical Center Foundation, Firehouse Community Development Corporation, Santa Visits Alviso Foundation and more. Free to participants who receive more than $200 in pledges. Or adults $20, youth, teens and seniors $5, and kids under 5 are free.

The grand opening of the Alviso Educational Center on 2420 Gold Street is this Friday, but you can stop by and see it anytime. It's an outdoor classroom, a covered area the size of a half-acre, with interpretive signs and picnic tables. The purpose is to provide information on water supply, flood protection and foster environmental stewardship. The celebration is Friday, Sept. 16 from 3 to 6 p.m. See flyer above and to the right.

World Water Monitoring Day is taking place at the  where you can conduct a water quality test of the Guadalupe River. The  of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge will supply all the equipment and instruction. Walk-ins are welcome, arrive any time on Sunday between 10 a.m. and noon.
