Wendy Tran performs with the San Francisco Renegades. Another Milpitas High grad participating in this ensemble is David Ceraolo.
Name: Wendy Tran, Milpitas High, Class of 2000
Instrument(s): Percussion, mostly mallets (xylophone, vibes, marimba, etc.) and timpani.
San Francisco Renegades: Over Labor Day weekend, she's heading to the Drum Corps Associates World Championships in Rochester, NY, for the final competition of the season.
Ten years after high school: In the summers, you'll find her with the Renegades and the rest of the year with Ohlone Community Band and sometimes Milpitas Community Concert Band.
Quote: "I am a very big drum corps fan, and since I missed my chance to be in a junior corps (i.e. Santa Clara Vanguard and Concord Blue Devils), Renegades being the only all-age corps in Northern California gave me that chance to live out the dream I did not fulfill when I was much younger."
Major differences: "The biggest difference between what I've felt is the commitment level. In high school, you have practice five days a week then have shows over the weekend. In a corps, especially with an all-age group, your time for practice and rehearsal is very, very limited. You only have rehearsals on the weekend, and sometimes rehearsal and then a show. So being in Renegades, I have to make sure I make time to practice on my own before going to weekend camps."
Invite: Renegades will have a Family Day performance at Del Mar High School Saturday at 7 p.m. This will be the last performance the Renegades will have in California before taking it to Rochester. Find more information at renegades.org/familyday.
