Recruiters from a dozen Kaiser Permanente Medical Centers in Northern California will be on hand to meet with the former NUMMI employees who have completed retraining programs. Many former NUMMI employees have received training in health care related occupations since the Fremont plant shut down in 2010.

The job fair is a partnership with the NUMMI Re-employment Center in Fremont, a job training center funded by the county and federal government.

The New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. plant, California’s last auto manufacturing plant – a joint venture of General Motors and Toyota - shut down in 2010, about 10 months after GM pulled out, leaving thousands of workers without jobs.

Kaiser Permanente has had a years-long relationship with NUMMI. Before the plant closed, Kaiser Permanente had an onsite Employee Health Clinic, staffed with physicians, for use by employees who had Kaiser Permanente plans.

“Kaiser Permanente wants to support the local communities we serve by helping the job seekers who are here today,” said Chris Irving, Director, Area Recruitment Services for Kaiser Permanente Northern California.

Months after the closing of the plant, the NRC, the NUMMI Reemployment Center,

opened. Some 2,700 former workers signed up to work with case managers at the center.

About 900 recently completed re-training programs, said Ralph Caccamo, site manager.

“The timing of this job recruitment fair is wonderful,” Caccamo said.

Recruiters will talk to job seekers about non-clinical jobs at Kaiser Permanente: aides, clerks, assistants, customer service and support roles. The volume of these jobs change daily, Irving said.

Recruiters and human resources professionals will also offer advise on navigating Kaiser Permanente’s Career Website, www.jobs.kp.org.
