La Milpa Mexican Restaurant - A Milpitas Tradition

Running restaurants has been a south bay tradition for generations in the Perez family. La Milpa has been serving authentic Mexican food to the people of Milpitas for nearly 30 years.

January 9, 1984: that's the day first opened its doors at 107 N. Milpitas Blvd. And, by the looks of things, the restaurant has been going strong ever since. The restaurant is hopping for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Many customers have been eating at La Milpa for decades. The owners, Ramon T. Perez, Sr.; his wife, Martha; and their son, Ramon Jr.; took time out of their busy schedules to talk to Patch recently.

PATCH: How did the idea to open a restaurant come about?

Ramon Perez, Sr.: We wanted to venture out on our own, and watch our own business grow.

Martha Perez: We noticed there were not enough sit-down restaurants in the area, just lots of fast food. We wanted to provide a service that was needed.

La Milpa serves authentic Mexican food. From enchiladas to chimichangas to flan, you can find it all on their menu. Many of the wait staff have worked at La Milpa for years, and know the customers by name.

PATCH: What makes La Milpa different from other Mexican restaurants?

Ramon Perez, Sr.: A commitment to provide excellent food and excellent service.

La Milpa can accommodate 100 people in its two dining rooms. After you are seated, a waiter brings you chips and salsa to snack on while you decide what to order.

PATCH: What did you do prior to opening a restaurant?

Martha Perez: Worked at my parents' Mexican restaurants. They had two - El Faro Mexican Restaurant and El Farito Mexican Restaurant, both in Sunnyvale. I helped manage all phases of the restaurants.

You will not have to wait long once your order has been placed - La Milpa is a well-oiled machine, and your meal will be on the table in a matter of minutes. The Mariachi music flowing through the speakers adds to the dining experience.

PATCH: What is the most popular item on the menu?

Ramon Sr & Martha: Our fajitas are very popular, along with our tortilla soup and flan for dessert!

Don't feel like cooking, but craving those fajitas? No problem - La Milpa also offers carry-out service. Just call La Milpa at 408-745-6540, place your order, and pick it up to enjoy at home. The menu is available online at http://lamilparestaurant.com/.

PATCH: What do you enjoy most about running a restaurant?

The Perez family: Meeting people and becoming part of the community!

When you come to La Milpa, be sure to bring an appetite, because the portion sizes are large. And don't forget to tell them Milpitas Patch sent you!
