At Naan-N-Masala, It's All About the Food

More than 400 reviews on Yelp, and a four-star rating speak volumes about this Milpitas Indian restaurant.

I recently discovered a hidden gem in a most unusual spot - the Saver's plaza! Naan-N-Masala first opened in its location at 94 S. Dempsey Road in 2008. The restaurant is tucked away in the rear of the plaza, in a very nondescript locale. We all know you can't judge a book by it's cover, so don't let that fool you! The food speaks for itself. This is no-frills dining at it's best.

Patch had a chance to speak to the owner, T.J. Bhullar, and we found out a little more about this hidden jewel.

PATCH: How did the idea to open a restaurant come about?

T.J.: This is something I always wanted to do; it is my passion.

Naan-N-Masala is a self-serve restaurant of sorts. When you enter the restaurant, you will be handed a menu. You will place your order with the cashier and then help yourself to a plate, glass and silverware. You can then have a seat and your meal will be brought out to you when it is ready. Feel free to help yourself to a pitcher of water or some warm Chai tea while you wait, or grab a cold beverage out of the fridge.

PATCH: What makes Naan-N-Masala different from other Indian restaurants in Milpitas?

T.J.: We use fresh ingredients. Everyone loves our food - our food is what makes us different. We take pride in what we serve.

Naan-N-Masala boasts quite an expansive menu. Vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike will be able to find something to order, and yes, they also serve desserts. The vibe in the restaurant is also very welcoming. There's a flat screen t.v. on the wall playing Bollywood songs that will have you tapping your toes to the infectious beats.

PATCH: What did you do prior to opening a restaurant?

T.J.: I worked in the high-tech industry, in the valley.

T.J., as he prefers to be called, is a very humble, soft-spoken man. He shared that most of his customers have found the restaurant by word-of-mouth. Those customers have also taken to Yelp to leave more than 400 reviews and have given Naan-N-Masala a four-star rating.

PATCH: What is the most popular item on the menu?

T.J.: Our Butter Chicken, Chicken Tikka Masala, Samosas and Garlic Naan are some of our most popular menu items. And our desserts!

PATCH: What do you like most about running a restaurant?

T.J.: What I like most is hearing all the compliments from the people about our food. That makes me happy.

Naan-N-Masala offers special discounts for religious ceremonies and will also cater your event.

PATCH: Is there anything else you want to tell the Patch readers?

T.J.: I would like to invite all the readers to come visit us soon. We welcome everyone - bring the family. Come visit us, try our food and help the local economy!

When you visit Naan-N-Masala, be sure to let them know Milpitas Patch sent you - T.J. will really like that!
