New Car Wash Coming To Calaveras Square 76 Station

Proposed car wash features a larger food mart, eight gas pumps and new landscaping.

How would you like to drop off your car at the new car wash, where the attendants take over and then return to you it clean, dried and shiny?

That's what is planned for the at 190 West Calaveras Blvd. near Serra Center and Calaveras Plaza. But it would require demolition and reconstruction.

The Milpitas Planning Commission approved the renovation project Wednesday.

Junior Planner Tiffany Brown, who presented the staff report, said the approval for the project had expired.

When asked by Vice Chair Noella Tabladillo about any changes Brown said, “There are two minor ones. The food mart is 31 sq. ft. smaller, 2737 sq. ft. before and 2706 sq. ft. after. And the car wash is 30 sq. ft. larger, 1520 sq. ft. before and 1550 sq. ft. after."

Architect Muthana Ibrahim described the services at the renovated station. “Drivers drop off their cars and attendants take over. Cars are vacuumed, prepared, and taken through the wash tunnel. After wiping dry and polishing clean vehicles are returned to their owners.”

Owner, Mohammed N. Ahmadi, was not present at the public hearing.

The plans call for increasing the number of gas pumps from 6 to 8 and adding new landscaping enhancing Milpitas' gateway.

Vice Chair Tabladillo inquired about windows, where none were provided, in the car wash for customers view the process.

There were questions from commissioners about the cost of air and water. Assistant City Attorney, Brian Otake, confirmed that state law provides free air and water for paying customers at service stations.

Ibrahim said, “We're shooting to start work in November and avoid the rainy season. This job could take four months. Our tentative completion and opening could come in February or March 2012.”
