Photos: Cal Skate Demolition

The demolition begins to clear the way for a new housing development.

The demolition to knock down Cal Skate of Milpitas and Minton's Lumber started earlier this week.

While her brother and some former employees came to see the skate rink, co-owner Chris St. Germain did not.

"I wanted to be there when the building went down," she said. But "everyone who was inside it meant everything to me. Not the four walls."

The final skate session on the last day of business on July 31 brought about 1,000 people, she estimated. About 200 couldn't get in. The building and parking lot both reached maximum capacity.

"Everyone had a great time," she said.
