SanDisk Acquires Milpitas-based Pliant Technologies

The corporation invests $324 million in Pliant, which specializes in solid-state memory drives, a market the SanDisk CEO says is fast-growing and profitable.

Bar Changes Ownership

With 80 different tequilas, sports bar Goose Looney's is now Tequila Shots, next to the library. The new owners Rafael Gurrola and Juan Mesa, have been remodeling since April, so old patrons won't recognize the new place with its sleek interior, sound systems, high-definition TVs and a back-lit bar. Happy hour is now 4-7 p.m.

Did you see the price for a gallon of regular at $3.99? The gas station is back after being closed for remodeling, and the mini mart next door will soon follow.

 

New King Eggroll

Notice the sign go up over the old Denny's building? Owner Mindy Tran said the restaurant will open at the end of June or beginning of July. The menu will offer Vietnamese and Chinese food. Different from the store in Newark, the location will offer dine-in service and seat about 80, she said.


Black Bear Diner

Owner Celina Gonzales confirmed that the diner is hiring at the old Zahir's restaurant on 174 W. Calaveras Blvd. Positions include managers, servers, cooks and dishwashers. View the job posting.


Great Mall's Newest Additions

Michael Kors Outlet is scheduled to open in September in Neighborhood 2, next to St. John Outlet. Another store, Foreign Exchange, offering fashions made from international designers, opened in late-April.

The mall is promoting Memorial Day sales with deals, such as 40 percent off the entire purchase, from Tuesday, May 24, through Tuesday, May 31, at Last Call by Neiman Marcus.


Unemployment Rate for Milpitas

Milpitas unemployment 10.2% Santa Clara County 9.9% San Jose  11% Mountain View 7.3%

From March to April, the state's Economic Development Department estimated jobs increased by nearly 3,000 among Santa Clara and San Benito counties. Leisure and hospitality decreased by 1,800 jobs.
