Great Mall Homicide: Man Beaten to Death With Baseball Bat

The identity of the man killed has yet to be released. A 26-year-old transient was arrested.

A 26-year-old transient reportedly beat an acquaintance to death inside the Sports Authority stor at the Great Mall on Friday morning.

Milpitas police released new details about the homicide investigation late Friday.

The man arrested in connection with the killing is Nathaniel Manlangit, a 26-year-old transient, police reported.

Officers responded to a report of a fight involving a weapon at the Sports Authority located at 1200 Great Mall Drive at 10:49 a.m., police Sgt. Raj Maharaj said.

An officer arrived at the scene about a minute later and confronted a possible suspect, Manlangit, in the store and took him into custody without incident, Maharaj said.

The victim was found dead in the store, police said. That man's identity has not been released, pending notification of his relatives.

Manlangit and the victim knew each other, Maharaj said.

They got into an argument in the store and Manlangit grabbed a baseball bat from a store shelf, then struck him several times, police said.

Police do not believe the incident is gang-related, and that Manlangit is the only suspect in the slaying, police said.

Manlangit was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of murder.

Detectives continue to investigate. They ask that anyone with information about the case is call the Milpitas Police Department at (408) 586-2400.
