The boy was in a child safety seat in the back but was ejected when the car came apart, police said.

A 3-year-old boy who was killed when his father crashed into a tree in Fremont while allegedly speeding on Tuesday afternoon has been identified by police as Angelo Gil, of Milpitas.

The accident happened around 12:50 p.m. on Paseo Padre Parkway between Chadbourne Drive and Dorne Place.

The toddler's father, 34-year-old Gilbert Gil, was driving the car and his mother, 31-year-old Josie Gil, was in the passenger seat when the car went off the roadway and struck a tree, Fremont police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said.

Bosques said it appears the car was speeding before the crash. She said the impact split the vehicle in half.

Angelo was in a child safety seat in the back but was ejected when the car came apart, Bosques said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gilbert Gil was also ejected, and suffered major injuries. His wife was critically injured and was pulled from the car by firefighters, Bosques said.

They were both taken to a hospital, where the wife remains today in the ICU in critical condition, Bosques said.

Gilbert Gil underwent surgery Tuesday night and was in stable condition Wednesday.

The crash shut down a section of Paseo Padre Parkway for more than seven hours Tuesday afternoon, police said.
