Nurses’ Strike Hits Bay Area Hospitals

Thousands of Northern California nurses and other health care professionals are picketing at 34 hospitals Thursday, including many in the Bay Area.

The one-day walkout is led by the California Nurses Association and National Union of Healthcare Workers against Kaiser Permanente and Sutter Healthcare, with whom the unions have labor contract disputes. The walkout is scheduled to end at 7 p.m.

In Milpitas, Kaiser Permanente has a medical office, pediatrics center and occupational therapy clinic, but no full-service hospital. None of those facilities have seen picket lines.

Karl Sonkin, a spokesman for Kaiser, said the pickets are primarily at larger hospitals, because a larger number of nurses work there than at the smaller clinics like Milpitas.

In a written statement, Gay Westfall, senior vice president for human resources at Kaiser, said, "We have anticipated this work stoppage and are prepared to continue providing our patients and members with high-quality heath care and service from a fully staffed team. All Kaiser Permanente hospitals and medical offices throughout Northern California will remain open during this one-day strike."
