What Does Memorial Day Mean to You?

We asked local residents and employees who have served our country to share their perspectives on the national holiday.

For nearly a century and a half, the purpose of Memorial Day has been to honor American servicemen and women who have died in war, but the meaning sometimes gets lost amid the barbecues and the three-day weekend.

Here, six individuals reflect on the significance of Memorial Day:

Denny Weisgerber, staff sergeant (retired), U.S. Marine Corps, recipient of the Purple Heart and the Navy CrossMilpitas Veterans Commission chairman, former mayor and Korean War veteran:

"Memorial Day is an opportunity to honor military members that have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Our country has the responsibility and privilege to be the leader of the free world. Often, we take for granted that this privilege was paid for with the blood of our military men and women. On Memorial Day, we are a grateful nation to these heroes. Let us not forget about them as we enjoy our freedom to gather to enjoy the get-togethers with our family and friends. May God Bless America!"

Lou Horyza
, captain (retired), U.S. Army, Combat Infantry Badge and Bronze Star, Korean War veteran:

"It means to honor all the deceased troops who have given their lives over the years, especially the Korean War deceased."

Dana Arbaugh, lieutenant colonel (retired), U.S. Air Force, Milpitas veterans commissioner and Vietnam veteran:

"I will be remembering my friend and Air Force Academy classmate, John Hasleton, who was shot down and killed in action flying in the Battle of An Loc. I flew on the same day and was lucky enough to survive."

Krissa Baylor, commander of the Medical Service Corps, U.S. Navy Reserve and physical education teacher at Russell Middle School:

"On Memorial Day, I always have a great affinity for my fellow military members who have made the ultimate sacrifice of giving their life for our country. I feel their loss almost as if they were my own brothers and sisters. It is an honor to serve in their memory. This year, I am hopeful that everyone also remembers those military members currently stationed away from home, their loved ones left behind, and the many wounded warriors who have returned home but now face the long road to recovery. It is through their sacrifices that we continue to enjoy our many freedoms."

Michael Tomlin
, sergeant, California Army National Guard, and sixth-grade teacher at Zanker Elementary.

"To me, Memorial Day is the recognition and honoring of the many men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice for my freedom, and the freedom of all people living in the United States of America."
