Fundraiser for South Bay Blue Star Moms Held on 4th of July

The fundraiser includes BBQ plates and more.

“The Fourth of July is Independence Day,” South Bay Blue Star Mom Past President Anna Vanegas says. “Our troops, past and present, have made it possible for us to celebrate this day. And it’s good that they (Khartoum) have the fundraiser on Independence Day because it reminds the community that there are troops still out there. And if they think it’s hot here, it’s really hot out there.”

The fundraiser on July 4 will include BBQ plates for a $10 donation as well as cocktails. Funds raised by the event will go to the organization, which puts together care packages for the troops, and supports the Silver and Gold Star families.

“One of our local boys lost a leg, so we help support boys like him,” Vanegas says. “The care packaging is also one of our missions and most of the monies raised go to it.”

Vanegas says the average cost of sending the care packages to the troops ranges between $8,000-$10,000.

“That’s why these fundraisers are so important to us,” she says.
