Milpitas High rowers compete in dragon boat race, live salsa band at the Colombian Independence Festival, microbrews at Newark Summerfest, and more.

Dragon Boat Sprint Race 2011

When/Where: Quarry Lakes, Fremont, Sunday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Why Go: Cheer on  as they compete in a regional race organized by the California Dragon Boat Association. About 30 crews will participate. Milpitas High is part of the Mountain View High team. Bring lawn chairs, picnic blankets, sunscreen, etc.

Pricing: $5 parking at this county park

 

When/Where: , Saturday, noon-8 p.m.

Why Go: You don't have to go far for a day of cultural activities, live music and dancing. Features salsa band Latin Brothers and guest Mr. Vallenato, who plays accordion in a traditional Colombian style.

Pricing: $10 donation and $6 parking at this county park

 

When/Where: , Saturday, 2-4 p.m.

Why Go: Cultural activities for kids and adults, plus musical performances and martial arts demonstrations.

When/Where: , Friday, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Why Go: Enjoy a high-energy mix of original and familiar worship and praise songs, sprinkled with a few mainstream hits. Performers include music director and keyboardist Neil MacPherson (Bobby McFerrin, John Popper, Marc Ford); vocalist Tammi Brown (Coldplay and Stanley Jordan); vocalist Will Russ (Bill Hopkins Orchestra); drummer Stuart Burr (Chubby Checker, John Lucas); vocalist Aaron Nuss; master acoustic guitarist Reggie Coates; and Nashville session bassist, Alex Cordrey (Luce).

When/Where: NewPark Mall, Newark, Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Why Go: The Newark Chamber of Commerce presents the 3rd annual, an outdoor festival at the . This year's theme is Microbrews and Music. Includes microbreweries, wine tasting, live music, motorcycle show, a car show, arts and craft vendors, food vendors and local commercial vendors along with a kids park.

Pricing: Admission and parking are free.

When/Where: Great Mall, Saturday, two shows, 4:30 and 7 p.m; Sunday, three shows, 2, 4:30 and 7 p.m. See .

Why Go: The features a motorcycle "Death Globe", clowns, trapeze artists 11-year-old Ruben Caballero III and his partner Marco Antonio, camels, jugglers, contortionists and a mini ponies act.
