Weekend Planner: Library Book Sale and More

Get a deal on used books, see Supervisor Dave Cortese at the Sunnyhills breakfast on Saturday and more.

Where/When: , starts Friday for members only, 7-9 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday noon-4 p.m. 

Why Go: , plus you get to take books home.

Pricing: You can join Milpitas Friends of the Library on site for $5 for an individual or $10 for a family. The sale ($1.50 per inch of books) runs through Sunday afternoon when the clearance sale begins and remaining books can be purchased for $5 per brown paper bag.

Where/When: Art Ark Gallery, 1035 S. 6th St, San Jose, Opening: Friday, 7-9 p.m., Sunday, noon-2 p.m., and .

Why Go: Inspired by the poetry she wrote while grieving the loss of her 18-year-old, Specialist Michael Mihalakis, a former Milpitas High student who died in Iraq, Mihalakis uses images she finds in nature to convey the difficult landscape of loss, grief and trauma. The artist will perform her poetry in the gallery at 7:30 p.m.

Where/When: , Saturday, 8 a.m.

Why Go: Dave Cortese, president of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, who will give a brief update on the county. Following the supervisor will be representatives from Rural/Metro, the new emergency services provider for Santa Clara County which will replace AMR. They will be followed by representatives of the Valley Medical Center Milpitas to give an update on the center that opened last year.

Pricing: Free, bring a breakfast potluck item to share

Why Go: City of Milpitas provides this educational clinic for kids to bike safety when on the road.

Where/When: , Saturday and Sunday, noon-4 p.m.

Why Go: Skip the trip to Napa and relax in the foothills of Milpitas. On Saturday, the patio will be closed for a private event, but the tasting room is open. On Sunday, the patio will be open.

Pricing: tastings are free, prices for wine bottles will vary

Where/When: , Saturday, 1-4 p.m.

Why Go: A selection of fine feathered friends and rabbits to adopt and take home.

Pricing: event is free, adoption fees may apply


Medical Outreach and Health Fair

Where/When: Tzu Chi Buddhist organization, 2355 Oakland Road at Montague Expressway, Sunday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Why Go: If you need to see a doctor, but haven't been able to afford the trip, consider stopping by the health fair. Volunteer doctors will be on hand for general medicine, vision and chiropractic. Volunteers will also provide blood pressure, weight and body fat measurements.

20th Annual Great Rotary Fremont Chili Cook-off

Where/When: The Saddlerack, Fremont; Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Why Go: The event will include live demonstrations by firefighters, music, entertainment and 30 varieties of chili. There will also be snacks and activities for kids, including fire safety presentations.

Pricing: $8 in advance; $10 at the gate



37th Annual Sunnyvale Art and Wine Festival

Where/When: Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m.-6p.m., downtown Sunnyvale on Murphy Avenue

Why Go: Wine and food pairings and a full live music and entertainment schedule. Credit cards accepted at booths.
