Weekend Planner: Stay Local

Summer's almost over, so here are some events in Milpitas this weekend to indulge in before the school year begins.

Why Go: The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has one evening during the holy month of  in which community members join in iftar, or breaking the fast.

When/Where: , Saturday, 6 p.m.

Why Go: Read a poem in front of supportive audience. Get a free cup of coffee!

Bone Marrow Drive

When/Where: , Saturday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Why Go: A Hindu health fair will take place at the temple. Stop by the Asian American Donor Program table and register to be a donor. All it takes is a simple cheek swab.

Bike Tour of the Don Edwards Wildlife Refuge

When/Where: Meet at , Saturday, 10 a.m.-1p.m.

Why Go: Bring your bike and join docent Steve Dill on a nine-mile journey to learn about the history, biology and restoration of the refuge’s salt pond landscape. This trail will appeal to both bicyclists and birders. Ride is moderately strenuous over unpaved but level levees. Helmets and water requested. Binoculars and camera encouraged.

Milpitas Knights Mini-Jamboree

When/Where:  field, Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m 

Why Go: The official season hasn't started yet, but we're all looking forward to some fun. The Knights will play neighboring PAL football leagues from Evergreen, Union City, Hayward, Scotts Valley and San Jose Storm. Each division consisting of five to seven teams for two hours plays each other for 20 minutes.

Yoga and Meditation Course

When/Where: 821 Anacapa Court, two-day course, Saturday and Sunday, 10-11:30 a.m.

Why Go: The Brahma Kumaris of Silicon Valley teach a practical, simple, and natural form of meditation. Raj Yoga is an ancient system of meditation and spiritual understanding that enables you to stabilize your mind, reduce stress, release tension and pain, and enhance health and well-being. Raj Yoga offers a step-by-step approach to the practice of meditation.

Mind & Meditation: Intro to The Art of Living

When/Where:Sunday, 3-5 p.m.

Why Go: If you've ever been curious about The Art of Living courses, here's an easy way to tap in for two hours. You'll learn light yoga poses, breathing exercises for meditation and be able to use these practices at home.

When/Where: , Saturday, 1 p.m. 

Why Go: Kawayan Folk Arts offers free lessons for youth each Saturday focused on a different folk dance from the Philippines.

Pricing: Free

 

When/Where: , summer weekends 1-4 p.m.

Why Go: Splash down, get wet and have fun!
