Time to Get "Tire Smart!"

Be "tire smart" for the summer season with these three easy tips.

Despite what you’ve heard in the news lately, America needs inflation—tire inflation that is! Only 15% of U.S. drivers check their tire pressure every month, while 60% of motorists wash their cars once a month (source: Rubber Manufacturers Association). While we are big fans of keeping cars clean, we are even bigger advocates for vehicle and tire safety. As June just so happens to be National Tire Safety Month—not to mention the start of the summer driving season (trip to Disney’s Cars Land, anyone?)—now’s the perfect time to get "Tire Smart" with these simple tips. Best of all:  practicing good inflation will save you money as properly inflated tires get the best gas mileage! And that’s no hot air.

  • Get a gauge. If you don’t already have one, buy a tire pressure gauge—they’re inexpensive and easy to use.  Check your tire pressure on a monthly basis, before long trips, and remember to always check tires when they’re cold before driving.

  • Know your psi. The recommended tire pressure for your vehicle (measured in psi or pounds per square inch) is listed in the owner’s manual and also typically on a label on the driver’s side door. Don’t confuse it with the maximum tire pressure listed on your tires. If you need help finding the right pressure for your vehicle’s tires, visit your dealer or give us a call.

  • Be a tread checker. Another important thing to remember is to also check your tire treads. You can use a tire tread depth gauge (don’t think there’s an app for that), or just use a penny. Simply place the penny into a few tread grooves across the tire; if part of Lincoln's head remains covered, you have enough tread depth in your tires—and can thank good ol' Honest Abe for that.

Congratulations! You are now officially “Tire Smart,” with a PhD in psi. Please contact us with any additional questions you may have about tire safety and maintenance. Pacific Tire Outlet provides free automotive service checks, so don’t hesitate to come in and see us.
