Already 21 Arrests in Early Cinco de Mayo Celebrations

San Jose Police and County Sheriff said celebrations appear to have kicked off early this year, on Friday night.

Festivities for the Mexican cultural celebration Cinco de Mayo got an early start Friday night and included more than 20 arrests by San Jose Police and the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities reported 21 arrests Friday night in the downtown San Jose and east County areas.

Police said included in the arrests were seven for misdemeanor charges, two for public intoxication, three for narcotics and three for possession of deadly weapons.

Additionally, three juveniles were arrested and booked into juvenile hall on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon when an officer saw the trio attack someone near Leeward Drive and Barlow Avenue in San Jose, according to police. The victim suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, police said. The attack was determined to be gang-related, according to police.

Another four juveniles violated curfew Friday night, police said.

There were no reports of vandalism.

San Jose police and Santa Clara County sheriff's officials that has accompanied Cinco de Mayo celebrations in San Jose and other parts of Santa Clara County in the past. Extra patrols will be monitoring celebration hotspots, according to police and sheriff's officials.
