Driver Dies in Morning Highway Accident

At least one man is dead after a deadly freeway crash near Milpitas this morning.

A 52-year-old San Jose man died this morning after his car went off the roadway on a connector ramp to state Highway 237 in Milpitas, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

The crash was reported shortly before 6:10 a.m. near the ramp from Calaveras Boulevard to westbound Highway 237.

A man driving a 1991 Toyota was in the far left lane at about 35 mph when he lost control of the vehicle, the CHP said. The Toyota went off the roadway into a dirt embankment and overturned onto its roof.

The driver of the Toyota, who has not been identified, was not ejected but was pronounced dead at the scene. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, according to the CHP. The driver was wearing his seatbelt.

The San Jose Mercury News is reporting that CHP officers have said the rain may have been a factor in the crash.

The left lane of the ramp was closed for about two and a half hours because of the investigation into the crash.
