Shortly before noon, Milpitas firefighters responded to a report of a residential fire in the 500 block of Penitencia Street.

When firefighters arrived at the apartment, a resident told them someone was possibly trapped inside. Firefighters entered the residence and encountered heavy smoke inside.

Firefighters found a person on the second floor, removed them from the building and then provided them with advanced life support, fire officials said.

The person was transported to Regional Medical Center of San Jose for further evaluation. Their condition has not been released.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze at about 12:35 p.m. An unattended cooking pot was found by firefighters on the stove and damage to the apartment was contained to the kitchen, fire officials said.
