Holiday DUI Crackdown Ends With 482 Arrests

'Avoid the 13' campaign ends with 75 fewer arrests countywide than same period last year.

Law enforcement agencies in Santa Clara County were out in full force New Year's weekend to wrap up this year's 17-day "Avoid the 13" DUI crackdown, which began Dec. 16 and ran through midnight on Jan.1.

This year's holiday campaign resulted in 482 reported arrests countywide, down from the 557 that were reported last year, according to Santa Clara County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Jose Cardoza.

Over the New Year's weekend, DUI checkpoints were set up all over the county looking to nab drivers who had too much to drink.

Acording to Cardoza, funding for the program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Law enforcement officials will be conducting more "Avoid" DUI operations throughout the county and region during Super Bowl Sunday in February, and for local St Patrick’s Day festivities in March.
