Milpitas Drivers: "Click It or Ticket"

Police soon starting summer campaign.

This year's seatbelt campaign kicks off May 21, and drivers and passengers caught without it should prepare to be sited.

Milpitas Police Department is joining law enforcement agencies around the state in the annual "Click It or Ticket" push, which runs until June 3. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 61 percent of those killed in overnight traffic crashes were not wearing seatbelts. During the day, 42 percent were not wearing them.

The administration credits seat belts with saving about 12,545 lives nationwide in 2010.

"As these statistics demonstrate, every time you get in a car, you're faced with a life-and-death decision," said Milpitas Police Chief Dennis Graham. "We ask you to choose life, and buckle up. It only takes a secon to tremendously increase your odds of surviving an accident."
