UPDATE: Milpitas Man Killed in 880 Freeway Crash Ejected

The man killed was a passenger in the Chevrolet, according to the CHP, and was not wearing a seat belt.

Updated 6:53 p.m. Jan. 12, 2013:

No alcohol or drugs were suspected as causes of a fatal crash that claimed the life of a Milpitas man on the 880 Freeway Saturday.

The 19-year-old was a passenger in the Chevrolet Cobalt that went off the northbound Interstate 880 -- south of Old Bayshore Highway -- and down an embankment about 1.40 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Anderson.

The speeding car then went through a rock ditch and landed on the southbound 880 on ramp, Anderson told Patch.

The passenger -- he was not wearing a  seat belt -- was ejected and died at the scene, the officer told Patch.

The driver, a 19-year-old man from San Jose, suffered major injuries and was hospitalized, Anderson said; he was wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred.

A condition report was not available Saturday night.

The crash was under investigation.
