Three people were injured in a two-car collision on Interstate Highway 880 in Milpitas early this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Around 12:10 a.m., a taxi driver was driving two passengers north on Highway 880 near the state Highway 237 off-ramp when he suddenly stepped on the brakes. A Nissan traveling behind the taxi slammed into the back of the cab, according to the CHP.
CHP officers said the two passengers sitting in the back of the taxi, an 83-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman, both from Milpitas, suffered major head trauma, fractured pelvises and other injuries in the crash.
The taxi driver, a 56-year-old Santa Clara man, suffered moderate injuries in the collision.
The driver of the Nissan, a 57-year-old man from Fremont, reported some pain to his chest. Neither driver was arrested in connection with the crash.
The roadway surrounding the crash was closed for nearly two hours as emergency crews responded.
The circumstances surrounding the collision are under investigation.
