Fire Downs Power Lines on Dempsey Road

Update: Electricity has been restored by PG&E, but the cause of the fire was not from downed power lines, according to a fire investigator.

Updated: 9:59 a.m. Correction: Fire investigator has determined that power lines went down as a result of the fire and were not the original cause of the fire.

Milpitas firefighters were on the scene of a fire Wednesday morning on Dempsey Road that caused power lines to go down and damaged two carports.

The fire started near the bottom of the pole, said Eric Emmanuele, the city's fire inspector. What likely burned first were abandoned mattresses and couches inside a residential complex that spread to the power pole and lines, he said.

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. crews were on scene restoring power, said Emmanuele.

A power pole, trees and grass were also damaged in the fire.

Damages are estimated at about $10,000, according to the fire department.
