Red Cross Provides Shelter to Dozens Displaced by Fire

The American Red Cross opened a shelter for the 32 residents displaced by a two-alarm apartment fire in Milpitas on Tuesday.
          
The temporary shelter opened at the Indian Community Center, located at 525 Los Coches St., to provide housing, food and other assistance to those displaced by the fire, according to the American Red Cross.
          
The Milpitas Fire Department is continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.          
Fire officials received a report of a fire at an apartment building at 428 Dempsey Road at about 11 a.m., Battalion Chief Robert Mihovich said. 
        
Additional fire engines and trucks from the Fremont Fire Department arrived to help fight the fire, Mihovich said.
         
When firefighters arrived, they saw smoke and flames coming from the second-floor balcony of one of the apartments in the complex, Mihovich said.          
After entering the apartment, firefighters confirmed there was no one inside and they doused the blaze at 11:45 a.m.
         
No one was injured in the fire, Mihovich said. 
        
Milpitas fire crews remained at the scene to investigate the origin of the fire, according to Mihovich. 
        
The San Jose Fire Department sent units to cover emergency services at Milpitas fire stations during the fire, Mihovich said.
