Infant Found Strapped in Car Seat Inside Dark Closet

A 'surprise' inspection by Social Services at a licensed, Milpitas day care center revealed the horror.

The license of a Milpitas day care center has been suspended and is in the process of being permanently revoked after an inspection and investigation turned up conditions certain to cause nightmares for parents…an infant who was strapped into a car seat, in a dark upstairs closet, facing the wall.

The California Department of Social Services performed the inspection on April 25 at Stephanie's Day Care on Stratford Drive.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, Social Services went to the center to investigate claims that "On multiple occasions including April 25, 2013, respondent kept child No. 1 restrained in a car seat inside a dark closet in an off-limits area of the facility."

During the inspection, Licensing Program Analyst Carla Baldwin "immediately inspected a room in the upstairs area of the home, including the closet in that room. During the inspection of the room, LPA observed an infant boy alone, strapped in a car seat, facing the back closet wall."

The license suspension forbids day care operator Stephanie Newbrough from accepting children. She was given 15 days to file an appeal.
