Legislative Wrap-Up: Veterans Day, Budget Cuts

Some of the action this past week in Washington and Sacramento involving East Bay legislators

Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) issued a statement in support of military personnel in recognition of Veterans Day on Monday.

“As the daughter of a veteran, I believe we have a moral responsibility to keep our promise to the men and women who have served our nation so bravely," said Lee.  "Veterans and their families deserve our full support and I will continue to fight to keep the promises made to our veterans who have answered our nation’s call."

Lee said she will continue to support legislation that helps veterans, including the Veterans Mental Health Accessibility Act and the Troop Talent Act of 2013.

Rep. George Miller (D-Concord) issued a statement, saying federal budget cuts are hurting the economy.

Miller's office released a report titled "Cuts To Nowhere," which states the automatic spending cuts under the "sequester" are slowing job creation and putting children, seniors and needy families at risk.

“Now that the irresponsible government shutdown is over, new budget talks have started in Washington,” said Miller. “And the top priority for these talks should be replacing the automatic budget cuts. The fact is, these automatic, indiscriminate cuts are placing an unfair burden on low- and middle-income children, families and seniors in Contra Costa County. We can and should replace these damaging automatic cuts with a balanced and targeted approach that will grow and strengthen America’s middle class."

State Sen. Ellen Corbett (D-San Leandro) was named the Legislator of the Year by the California Association of County Veterans Service Officers.

The group cited Corbett's “dedication and support of California’s veterans during her legislative career, especially her support for county veterans service officers.”

She'll receive the award in February at the association's Annual Legislative Day at the Capitol.
