Military Veterans Should Register with City

Veterans and their families who live in Milpitas may be eligible for job assistance and other benefits.

It’s roll call time for military veterans in Milpitas.

The city’s Veterans Commission recently kicked off a registration program aimed at identifying and assisting veterans from all branches of the military living in Milpitas.

“But first, we have to know they’re out there,” said Denny Weisgerber, chairman of the commission. He added the commission needs to know how many veterans are in the area so it can tailor its programs and literature to them.

“We want to be able to access the vets to let them know what benefits are available to them and, in this economy, where they can find jobs,” Weisgerber said.

In order to reach out to them, the commission is distributing a Veteran Resident Registration Form and asking residents to let them know who they are, where they live and how to contact them.

While the commission doesn’t directly offer services to veterans, “We can point them in the right direction,” Weisgerber said. “Sometimes they’re turned loose [from the service] without a clue. They don’t realize there’s a VA, and that’s where we can help.”

Both male and female military veterans of all ages are encouraged to register with the commission. The form is available at most city offices, including City Hall, the recreation center and library. It also is available on the commission’s webpage. Users should click the Veterans Online Survey button.
