City to Host Veterans Day Ceremony, Receive Award for Providing Jobs to Veterans

Milpitas will honor local veterans during a Veterans Day Ceremony Friday morning. The City will receive an award for its efforts to provide jobs for veterans.

Veterans who returned from battle in World War II more than 60 years ago, and those who have just recently returned from war, will sit side-by-side to be honored at the Milpitas Veterans Day Ceremony this Friday.

This year’s observance is expected to be especially poignant, coming just one day before a for fallen , who was killed in action in Afghanistan on Oct. 27.

During Friday’s ceremony, the City will be recognized as a "Patriotic Employer" by the California Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), for its efforts to provide jobs for veterans.

Dignitaries including Milpitas Mayor Joe Esteves, members of the Milpitas City Council, Santa Clara County Supervisor Dave Cortese, and representatives from local community service organizations will be on hand to honor veterans this Friday.

“Our country's veterans have fought and sacrificed so much for us,” said Renee Lorentzen, community enrichment coordinator for the City of Milpitas. “They deserve our respect and honor. It's with ceremonies like our Veterans Day event that allow us to say ‘thank you.'”

More than 100 people are expected to attend the ceremony. It will be held Friday morning in Veterans Plaza at City Hall, 455 E. Calaveras Blvd. The ceremony will begin, rain or shine, at 9 a.m. Veterans Plaza is located behind City Hall, by the Community Center.

The Veterans Commission Chairman is Denny Weisgerber, former mayor and decorated Korean War veteran.
