VIDEO: Fallen Milpitas Marine Honored On Base Thursday

Stephen J. Dunning was killed last fall.

Members of the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment remembered five fallen Marines during a base ceremony Thursday morning at Camp Pendleton in San Diego County.

The unit of the 1st Marine Division returned last month after a seven-month deployment to Afghanistan's Helmand Province.

Those honored included Staff Sgt. Stephen J. Dunning, 31, of Milpitas, .

Dunning was an explosive ordnance disposal technician, and was killed while attempting to disarm an explosive device in the Helmand province when he was killed. He was awarded a posthumous Purple Heart.

  • Lance Cpl. Benjamin W. Schmidt, 24, of San Antonio, TX.
  • Sgt. William C. Stacey, 23, of Redding, CA.
  • Cpl. Jon-Luke Bateman, 22, of Tulsa, OK.
  • Lance Cpl. Kenneth E. Cochran, 20, of Wilder, ID.

The unit is the City of San Clemente's adopted battalion.
