Band Camp: A New Show in the Works

The Milpitas High marching band and color guard have been hard at work learning the first song to this season's show. Hint: There's a Julius Caesar theme.

On the last day of band camp Tuesday, parents got a preview this season's marching band show Veni, Vidi, Vici (I came, I saw, I conquered) about Julius Caesar.

"In the year 79 B.C. Julius Caesar began his rise to power in the Roman Republic ..." began Milpitas High Music Director Chris Kaldy as the performance started.

It's a history lesson for students about the life of the legendary Roman general.

"The first song is about his rise to power. The second song, the ballad, is where he meets Cleopatra, and he has a baby with her. The third song is when he comes back from meeting Cleopatra...and he's killed," explained color guard co-captain, Jubilee Hardwick, a junior.

A new color guard choreographer Bruce Paulson is working with the 17 members of the color guard this season.

"We were originally going to have them be all Cleopatra, but when we found out we had [two] boys in the color guard, it provided an interesting twist," he said. "So we decided to give them all a warrior outfit instead ... and have just Roman soldiers."
