Girls Tennis: 2011 MHS Preview

The Lady Trojans hit the courts again with a season opener scheduled Wednesday against American High.

Although a Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division title eluded them, two players on the Milpitas High girls tennis team finished the 2010 season on top.

, now a freshman in college, and Christy Tain, a Trojans junior this fall, captured the 2011 Central Coast Section Individual Doubles Championship in stirring fashion.

The duo won two matches on the final day of the tournament, including a straight sets victory over a team from Stevenson School-Pebble Beach in the championship round.

“It was a great way to end the year,” Tain said. “It was the best way to close out the season. With a big win.”

Now it’s Tain’s time to lead the way for the fresh-faced Trojans tennis bunch.

Nguyen ended the 2010 season on a 26-match win streak.

Tain, the No. 2 singles player throughout the regular season last year, is now the top singles player in the Milpitas lineup heading into the fall season.

“I’m a little nervous about it,” Tain said. “This season should be a lot of fun. Playing with Vivian (Nguyen) really helped my confidence. That’s going to help me a lot this season. I’m planning on doing my best and helping my team any way I can.”

Tain and Lina Ye move up in the singles order, leaving the No. 3 and No. 4 spots in the singles starting lineup to be fought for by a few up and coming freshman players that have caught head coach Dong Pham’s eye in practice.

“A couple freshman have impressed me,” Pham said. “I’m still working on deciding on who will play No. 3 and No. 4 singles, but we have a couple nice players to choose from. “

Ye, a Milpitas senior, has been in the Milpitas singles lineup all four years of her career.

“There’s a lot of new players,” Ye said. “I still think it’s pretty normal around here. I think we still have a shot as last year to win league.”

Similar to Tain, Ye stressed that she wants to continue to strengthen her mental game heading into the season.

The Trojans top two and the rest of the gang open the 2011 season on Sept. 7 at home against American High.
