Milpitas High, Rancho Milpitas Middle Named California Distinguished Schools

They join more than 200 high and middle schools in state recognized.

Two Milpitas schools were recently recognized for "going the extra mile," which earned them the titles of California Distinguished Schools.

Milpitas High School and Rancho Milpitas Middle School join a total of 218 public middle and high schools named 2013 California Distinguished Schools for academic achievement.

“These schools have gone the extra mile to provide high-quality instruction that puts their students on the right path toward career and college,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson in a news release.

The California Distinguished Schools program "recognizes those schools that have made progress in narrowing the academic achievement gap," according to the California Department of Education.

The application process consists of a written application, which includes a comprehensive description of two of the school's signature practices, and a county-led site validation review process, which validates the implementation of those signature practices. Those "signature practices" are then shared with other schools.
