Az Dyer now advances to the next level of competition, scheduled at 6 p.m. Monday March 4 at Brandon's Restaurant in the Beverly Heritage Hotel in Milpitas, according to the Lions Club.

High school senior Az Dyer won the Milpitas Executive Lions Club Student Speakers Contest last week, according to a club representative.

Dyer, who attends Piedmont Hills High in San Jose, is taking part in the 76th annual Lions Student Speakers Contest, according to contest chair MariCris Benitez.

The topic chosen by Lions Club administrators for all competing students this year is "How Do We Create and Keep Jobs in America?"

Dyer now advances to the next level of competition, scheduled at 6 p.m. Monday March 4 at Brandon's Restaurant in the Beverly Heritage Hotel in Milpitas, Benitez said.

Dyer has four more levels to compete in to earn a chance to reach the state finals on June 1, Benitez said.

He was chosen to advance by judges Diane Bonbright, catering manager of Beverly Heritage Hotel, Bill Ferguson, Sunnyhills Neighborhood Association president, and Randy Garcia, Piedmont Adult Day School executive director, Benitez said.

The Lions Clubs of California awards more than $103,000 in scholarships to winners in the Student Speakers Contest, and the top finalist earns $21,000 in scholarship funding, according to the Lions Clubs of California.
