BASEBALL: Milpitas Pitching Slows Down Gunn

David Garay shines on the mound to help Trojans nab key league win.

The Score: Milpitas 9, Gunn 1.

The Star: Milpitas High junior baseball pitcher David Garay pitched one of his best games of his career, nearly shutting out Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division rival Gunn High, Tuesday afternoon at Milpitas High. Garay threw 90 pitches on the day with 6 strikeouts, 59 strikes and 31 ball en route to a convincing 9-1 Milpitas victory.

The Turning Point:  After the Trojans ending the first inning on a 4-0 run, they never took their foot off the gas. Milpitas showed up ready to play and smashed Gunn’s starting pitcher to the tune of seven early runs. The Milpitas drove balls all over the field during the impressive win. Milpitas did little things to secure its lead, stealing several bases to advance runners. However, Gunn managed to bring a runner home late in the seventh inning with two outs left in the game.

The Quotes: “I wanted it bad.  I wasn’t tired, but the last five pitches, I felt it,” Milpitas junior pitcher David Garay said about coming close to shutting out the Gunn offense. “As a pitcher, I wanted our team to score more runs. As for my pitching, it’s getting better and better.”

What's Next? Milpitas now improves to 6-3 in El Camino play after winning  the first of two games against Gunn this week. The Trojans improve to 10-3-1 overall and will take their five-game win streak against host Gunn High on Thursday. The Trojans look to climb their way up to the top of the division, now only two spots out of first place with seven games left in the season.
