SWIMMING: Milpitas Tidal Waves Make Gains at Championships
About 45 kids, ages 6 to 15, represented Milpitas this past weekend at their largest meet of the year, the Pac Swim Zone 1 South Championships.
The Swim Meet: Milpitas Tidal Waves represented the city at the Pacific Swimming Zone 1 South Championships, at the George Haines International Swim Center in Santa Clara on Saturday and Sunday.
The Stars: Among all boys ages 11-12 who competed in the 50m fly, 50m breast and 50m free, Mark Tran's time always put him in the top eight or higher. Within division C, he ranked first in all three of the events.
Franklin Do, 8, came out on top for the 100m Individual Medley at 1:39:12 among boys 8 years old and under in division C. He will now compete in division A for this event.

The Coach: "For the most part, everything went smoothly. A lot of swimmers improved all their times." –Jaime Chew, aquatics program director/supervisor of recreation services, city of Milpitas.

The Competition: More than 1,800 kids from Santa Clara Swim Club, Campbell Waves, San Jose Aquatics, Seaside Aquatic Club, Gilroy Gators Swim Team, Valley Splash and more.
The Downside: Milpitas Tidal Waves members did not get to score against other teams because of something unrelated to their performance. The rules require parents to work the events and train to be officials. "We only have one parent that's a certified official," said Chew.
