What would be more interesting is a follow up story on why the reporter is using incorrect data .Read More Curious on what the ranking of MHS would be with the current published API score and current data on college ready graduates.

Congratulations Lisa on your "2013 Outstanding Volunteer" award by superintendent and MUSDRead More board and your outstanding contribution in MHS Athletic Booster Club. Congratulations and many thanks to Coach Bobby for working with our kids on football ground. While it is good to get kudos from MUSD board and superintendent, asking the question and making to improve the score will only improve future of our kids, specially when we are paying more to our schools in measure B and measure E.

I see I have no response. And I'll bet the majority of people would respond "ofRead More course"..... Sorry folks, to the first airport in Oregon ( Medford,35 miles over the Northern border) , and flight time to San Diego (Southern border) from SF are nearly identical. WTH! Congratulations Bay Area...you are in Central California....Teachers need to teach and be allowed to do so.

Like I said, proves my point most definately, and Mrs. Java had a burning comment but couldn'tRead More disclose herself-Patch staff are Trolls and proven. I rest my case! Psst, change is coming, that's fine, that's only cause you mean emails will be matched and confirmed with thd person, you know Mrs. Java, like you did - post a comment, "First Name, email, and password-thank you for joint Patch :) ha ha, so easy. That would be better, but it seems you cant afford it yet! Ohh wait, trouble, if trouble is what you're trying to get us into, can we include you Mrs. Java for your Trollness ... I think you should. Common there's nothing wrong with being fair. Let's keep that in mind for the "change" woooo hooo, little baby cry.

This is the problem with this data/article. Without basis and a complete picture, such as how longRead More the teachers have worked, as well as the fact of using averages, it is impossible to draw any worthwhile conclusions. For example, the fact that the Cupertino Superintendent makes $256,354 ($345,193, TCOE) in 2011 isn't used in your comparison. I also have no idea what you're talking about in regard to the Educational board and the Milpitas community educational fund. If you mean the endowment that I run, it has absolutely no relation/connection to either measure, nor does the Board of Education have anything to do with it. But, at the end of the day, I'm only interested in improving the school district, thereby improving our community. API is only one measure of school effectiveness. A strong API is a result of teachers, students, parents and the community working together to provide the best possible educational experience to its students. So, if you're interested in improving the schools, then get involved with your school and figure how to help.

Hi Samantha, While your argument does have validity, in the public school system, often the teachersRead More buy supplies for the children, throughout the year and also other additional reading and book materials which the school often does not have a budget for. I do not grudge the teachers a higher salary since some of them really support their families and work very hard on upgrading their own skills and the curriculum. Vivek.

Samantha - I did not support measure E or measure B because MUSD board did not offer any compellingRead More case for $95M they imposed in local taxes. I just hope measure E oversight committee is NOT keeping the mouth shut over inappropriateness of funds. I do support seniors and volunteer my time in community service. Please let me know, if I could be of any service to you. The sad thing is that In Milpitas, 5,658 residents participated (22.86 percent) of 24,750 total registered voters during measure E vote. According to San Jose Mercury News, by Shannon Barry, n 06/06/2012, supporters of measure E were 1. Superintendent Cary Matsuoka 2. Board of Education Vice President Marsha Grilli 3. Her granddaughter Meghan Winston (5 year old currently in Curtner Elementary) 4. Trustee Danny Lau ref: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:V4qP-v7ym-QJ:www.mercurynews.com/milpitas/ci_20798408/milpitas-measure-e-passes-64-percent-support+&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

I think this is great! Why didn't anyone think of this before? It seems we only gave complimentsRead More in the old days when we wrote on someones yearbook. Usually kids only get compliments from their parents (if they're lucky) and sometimes from teachers. Kids (especially teenagers) are so insecure that hearing something good from their peers could change their whole outlook! It could even help counteract the effects of bullying and lower suicide rates. I totally commend these young people for coming up with this. I hope this goes countrywide!
Dan Manassau February 14, 2013 at 07:35 pm
I think It is a good idea, but we need more oversight on the way the money is spent by the UCRead More system. If not, they will just raise their salaries instead of lowering the tuition. I will read the bill closely before I vote yes. The govt can't and won't control itself as is proven by our present tax system. We have the highest taxes in the nation and it is mostly wasted.

Actually, the lice shampoo didn't work for us at all, but this worked great, and was much less toxicRead More than the shampoo option: http://www.nuvoforheadlice.com Also, our school said my son could go back to school as soon as he was treated, and they did not check for nits, nor do they have a no nits policy.

Its an interesting idea. Now, though, who is going to pay for all the computers needed for theseRead More tests? To make the test fair, each student will have to take them at the same time. Where will the schools put them? Who will pay for IT staff to make sure they are operating properly? Who will pay the insurance for the computers, and for the extra electricity needed at each school site? Where are the facts behind the ability to implement this new plan? This plan needs more details explained.

Not only that, but CST participation rate is a metric for AYP, so a school that falls below the 95%Read More threshold will not make AYP (not that that matters anymore, nor that it ever mattered for non-title1 schools like SM). I would expect ongoing district assessments are used more than CSTs for placement for intervention given that there are more of them and they are more closely aligned with what is going on the classroom. If its true that schools are using CST results for individual intervention decisions, then I think parents should know that (and realize its probably a bad idea). Your school site council should have info on that since its job is to monitor things like that. In any case, anyone who wants to opt out should also ask their child. They should have a say in the matter.
Louis Educe January 10, 2013 at 12:07 pm
Gail Ann, while you are correct on the parent opt out right please make sure and tell parents to askRead More the school/district what the STAR scores are used for with in the disrtict/school/grage-level. if the child is in the middle grades (7th and 8th are most important) these scores are used to make placement choices for high school courses. Many HS counselors will NOT look very closely at grades (A,Bs) because of the fear of grade inflation - unless you can make sure you child also have some non-biased, standardized (normed) test data their placement choices might be limited. If your child is a high performer you can have them start taking the PSAT in 8th grade (but they will be compared to 10th grade standards). At the lower grade levels the CST data is used to also make placement choices into intervention as well as higher level instructional clusters. Be well aware of the implications of withdrawing your child from the testing before you just exercise you right to "make a point"

"I am responding to Shlripathi Kamath's post of January 15 which..." http://bit.ly/U1OGkP
Sylvia Jones January 16, 2013 at 06:24 pm
I am responding to Shlripathi Kamath's post of January 15 which takes exception to a teacher whoRead More receives a 78% pension for 12 years of teaching based on a salary in her/his last year in the classroom of $78,912. The writer cites no source for the information, and as a retired teacher I am concerned that readers will take this claim as fact. Please consider the following: teacher retirement in the State of California is administered by the state, not by school districts. It is based on teacher age at retirement, number of years taught, and birthdate. Here is an estimate of what a California teacher might receive based on the profile the writer uses. It is based on the formula as I came to understand it in going through my own retirement process. Using the writer's data, here is what a California teacher might receive If she/he retires this June with 12 years of experience, a birthdate of 1946 and an age at retirement of 64 years and seven moths, her/his retirement stipend would be approximately $1,869.89 per month or $22,438.68 per annum. That equates to 28% of final compensation, not the 78% that the writer decries.

Good teachers of course matter and I think most of them are quite good. I have kids at SRVHS andRead More CWMS and for the most part am pleased with how professional they are. Sometimes though we do run into a bad one. When that happens my kids are strong enough to work through it and be fine but the weakers ones suffer. In our school system it is MUCH easier for the teachers because you have VERY involved parents. We are a team and work with eachother. I hate the teachers union but respect the teachers. I also think there are many things we could do to improve things for students and teachers but we lack the backbone to do it.

My kids were school age during the Columbine attacks. I remember hateful graffiti being removedRead More hurriedly before student arrived to see what some wanna-be copy cat had painted on the wall. Volunteering at the school eased us all back to a routine. There were already undercover police on campus where my children attended school. There were campus police at DeAnza when the planned massacre there was averted. People who commit mass murders in such public settings intend to die and take as many with them as possible. Suicide by cop or by any other trained shooter is part of the plan. Deterring potential campus shootings has to provide safety without locking down the campus as if it were a prison with armed guards. While this is the most likely time for copycat threats, knee jerk reactions from gun advocates and gun control proponents alike are likely to do more harm than good, firing up emotions rather than logic. Our families are already under more surveillance on a daily basis than is psychologically healthy. Kids and adults are under tremendous stress. We all face an uncertain future and none of us feel safe when we cannot protect ourselves from violence. For now, let's listen to our kids and address their fears. Let's ask the schools for volunteer opportunities so our kids know we are there for them. Involve the parents and children in any discussion with their own schools on how best to address the issue with convergence thinking, not artificial consensus.

First of all, not every American can buy and own a gun. Our constitution gives those that can theRead More right to do so. Sure you may be able to,with the help of liberal progressives, ban certain types of weapons. To ban all guns you would have to change the constitution. That will never happen period nor should it. If you don't want a gun, don't buy one.
